Even after two years, Ryan was still half trying to figure out how the heck being here was even possible. Not that he was complaining. He liked it here much better than he liked home. It was just so...odd. Nearly everything he had grown up had told him that magic didn't exist except in fairytales and books. Fairy tales weren't real though. Of course, he would always hope that it could be real, but he would always have to yank himself back into reality and remember that it wasn't. Not any more! It had been hard, playing three years worth of catch up, but he had pulled it off in the end. And it was worth it. So worth it. He was out, and away from his house with something actually worthwhile to do. He only had to go back during summers, which was a step up from being locked in there 24/7.
The fifth year sighed slightly, took out his wand, and decided to try practicing some of the spells. He'd probably need to know the majority of them for the practical examination at the end of the year. Joy. Couldn't wait for that! He took off his satchel, took out his wand, and pointed it at the sky. "Avis!" he called, moving his wand in two bumps, from left to right. There was a bit of a bang that attracted a few eyes, followed by smoke. Out of it, came a small flock of birds, as if the courtyard needed more. Oh well. Practice was practice. They flew as a flock at first, and then started dispersing. It was rather nice to watch...he just hoped that none of them decided to leave... presents on people's heads or shoulders like they had done last time his class had tried the spell.

Calypso was sitting with her beloved cat Artemis reading a book by the middle fountain. She loved the sounds of the fountain and the feeling of Artemis sleeping on her lap, it was one of the most peaceful times of the day for her. She was so immersed in her book that when the loud bang shot off by her she jumped, losing her book in the fountain and Artemis waking up and jumping off her lap. She looked up at the sky and saw a flock of birds, the Avis spell that she had learned in charms last year was in full effect above her. She looked over at Artemis who looked up at the birds hungrily, his tail swishing to every movement and his eyes calculating the best way of attacking the magical birds. She chuckled and reached into the foutain for her book. It was soggy and ruined, she pulled out her wand and tapped it saying the spell under her breath and bam it was brand new again. She stowed it away in her bag and got up, she walked over to the boy and said, That was pretty good. Nice formation. She said with a smile to the guy. Artemis padded up next to her and looked up at the boy expectantly as if to say gimme more birds. Calypso smiled and said, Apparently, Artemis thought it was good too.

Ryan sighed slightly and just sat down, watching the birds still fly away. They were so free. Could go anywhere in the world they wanted. Weren't constricted by a house, or a school. School was definitely better than his house, Ryan knew that, but still... A few feet away from him, he saw a feline eyeing the created birds hungrily and smirked slightly. Not today Puss, he said silently. Those are my birds. For a moment, he considered using it in the offensive, and having them attack the kitty, but then he noticed that the cat, with its assumed owner were walking towards him. Well, there went that idea. He took a deep breath and lifted his head up slightly as she approached. She was coming up to him, no question about it. Even though he had been here for two, going on three years, he still wasn't used to this. Wasn't used to magic. Wasn't used to people.
"Hi," he said shortly, as she got nearer, eyeing the cat warily. Having pets around this place was another thing he was trying to get used to. Big time culture shock. Finally, her words hit him, and he looked at her skeptically. "....thanks...?" he more asked than said. He didn't believe her, and it was pretty much foreign to people his own age talking to him, forget praising. And that was mostly why he didn't talk to people his age. Awkward for him, but he had to deal. He'd get used to it...eventually. No time to practice like the present. "Artemis, huh?" he asked dryly, raising his eyebrows. "Is that after the greek goddess or somthin'?"

Artemis looked at the boy and his tail swished impatiently. He would like to see the boy try something, he emmited a low growl and looked up as Calypso walked up to the boy and sat down swishing his tail. Artemis hush. Calypso said with a smile to Ryan. Sorry. He normally doesn't growl. I don't know what is with him. She smiled brightly at the guy. She beamed and said, Hello! And you're welcome. When he asked about her cats name she nodded. Yes. She was the greek goddess of Hunting and my kitty here has been hunting since he opened his eyes. She smiled, scooped the cat up in her arms and snuggled him. Artemis say hello. The cat meowed stubbornly and swished his tail under her arm. She let the cat down and said, I'm Calypso. She smiled and held out her hand to the guy. And you are?

Ryan heard the cat growl and rolled his eyes. Oh please, he thought. He had half a mind to growl back, but that would just probably provoke the cat. Ryan didn't want to tend to any more wounds than he had to. Impatient, upset little kitty. Oh well. He half looked up as Calypso drew nearer to him, and gave a shrug. "It's fine," he said simply. He wasn't used to people talking to him, or animals growling at him, but he was still alive, so that counted as fine to him.
Artemis. Yeah, he had definitely read about her once. "Looks like quite the hunter..." he said, still eyeing the cat that was still probably overly suspicious of him. Ryan internally relaxed as Calypso (...who, now that he thought of it, was also a name of a greek Goddess, or had to do something with Greece). "Yeah, hi to you too. I'm not sorry that you can't make a meal out of my arm," he said back to the cat's resentful meow. He gave a slight nod as she gave her name. "Hi, Calypso," he said, hesitating while looking at her hand. He knew what to do, mostly from movies and books... you shook it, right? "Ryan... Simons," he replied, giving her hand a quick shake.
